Mayumi Ohmura was born in Tokyo Japan. She is the daughter of a Japanese father and a Danish mother, and she was raised and educated in both countries. Ohmura studied International Relations at Asia University. Because of her father's work as a diplomat, she spent her childhood in Denmark and Sweden. Afterwards, she moved to Japan where she started her career as an actress at the age of nine, and appeared in the musical “Annie” and the Broadway musical “Singing in The Rain,” among many others. Her performances were broadcasted by the Japanese public channel (NHK) in a program called “Idol on Stage” for nearly three years. She graduated the Tokyo Conservatory
set up and ran the organization by the most famous kabuki actor Tamasaburo Bando.

Having been engaged in show business for more than 15 years, Ohmura started to seek a second career. As a result, she went back to Denmark to study jewelry and textile design. She is also a certified Pilates teacher, and with a therapist’s point of view, there is a rule by which she aims to abide:

Always start from finding any relationship between the designed object and human body.

Ohmura’s deep interest in technology, materials and function highlight her desire to tell a story with the things she makes—she uses designed objects to comment on our times.  With this outlook combined with her activities, she set up her own studio MA,YU in 2009.
